RUFINO CARDINAL SANTOS 47th death anniversary
Today, we celebrate the 47th death anniversary of the late RUFINO CARDINAL SANTOS, the first Filipino Cardinal.
In 1961, His Eminence Cardinal Santos was so moved by the pitiful condition of the altar of a number of parish churches in the Archdiocese of Manila. In his observation: “Ang mga gamit sa Misa marumi, magulo, hindi mabango, parang walang nag-aalaga.” He immediately decreed the creation of a service guild, organized on the parochial level. This guild consisted of Catholic laywomen whose main concern would be to make and take care of priestly vestments and altar linens, as well as ensure the cleanliness and beautification of their respective parish churches. THAT THIS WORK SHALL BE A MEANS FOR THEIR SANCTIFICATION.
That decree was officially promulgated on April 28 1961. That particular organization of Catholic laywomen was called MOTHER BUTLER GUILD (MBG).
Thus the MBG was born.
Please say a prayer for the eternal repose of his soul.
